Norman F. Varpness

Norman F. Varpness age 88 of Marshall, formerly of Cottonwood, passed away Friday January 23, 2009 at Avera Hospital in Marshall.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 31 at St. Lucas Lutheran Church in Normania Township.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Interment will be in the church cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the organization of the donor’s choice. The Redwood Valley funeral home is in charge of arrangements.

Norman F. Varpness was born November 19, 1920 in Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota to Albert and Mollie (Miller) Varpness. He was united in marriage to Lucille on October 4, 1941 at Silo Lutheran Church in Cottonwood. After years of farming and living on the farm, Norman and Lucille moved to Hill Street Place in Marshall in 2007 where they have enjoyed much hospitality with the friendly residents. Norman loved golfing, camping, winter trips to Arizona, and family gatherings. Many people remember him for his Ole and Lena jokes. Norman had lots of good memories of the kids on his bus trips.

Norman is survived by his wife Lucille of 67 years; daughter Judy Blaisdell and her children: Kristi (Tom) Ambro (Mary, Amy, and Alexander); Kirk (Jean) Blaisdell (Tyler and Kellsey); daughter Linda (Terry) Dieken and their children: Jodi (Brad) Bofferding (Alexandria and Teal); Jeremy (Megan) Dieken (Izabella and Samuel); daughter Carol Belling and her children: Simone (Dane) Haugen (Tait, Liv, and Marit); Nathan (Melinda) Belling (Jacob, Isaac, and Trevor); and her foster son Ron (Gretchen) Noon (Brittney). He was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers; 1 sister; sons-in-law Don Blaisdell and Bernie Belling; and step-grandson Benjamin.
